(SPS#03-COPES) Communications and Control in Power and Energy Systems

The Special Session on Communications and Control in Power and Energy Systems will be held in conjunction with the 17th edition of the IEEE International Conference on Ubiquitous Wireless Broadband ICUWB’2017 in Salamanca, Spain, from September 12th to 15th, 2017.

Scope

The use of renewable energy sources has increased significantly, stimulated by policies and incentive programs aiming at decreasing the dependency on fossil fuels and avoiding environmental damages. The uncertainty of renewable based generation due to its dependency on natural resources forces the need for adaptation from the consumers’ side, thus potentiating the emergence of demand response. One of the main achievements of the power and energy sector in recent years is the common acceptance by the involved stakeholders that power systems require major changes to accommodate in an efficient and secure way an intensive use of renewable based generation. The conclusion that the so-called Smart Grids (SG) are required is a crucial foundation for the work to be done in the coming years towards the modernization and restructuring of the power sector according to the new paradigms. However, the quick development process of SG is not entirely free of problems. The roll out of metering and control equipment is not sufficient to guarantee the successful implementation of SG, as it relies on the development of suitable communication and data security networks that enable benefiting from the full potential of SG.

COPES aims at providing an advanced discussion forum on recent and innovative work in the field of communications in power and energy systems, bringing together different views and experience from experts from research, academia and industry.
